To clarify some misconceptions:

  • I have a high IQ.
  • I read over 400 words per minute with at least 60% comprehension.
  • I won a writing contest when I was five years old (I was considered in the 6-10 category).
  • I was considered a “child prodigy.”

Okay? Okay.

  • I have always had average, if not poor, grades.
  • My artistic skills are mediocre.
  • Terrible, horrible, awful social skills.
  • I look like a gorilla.
  • I will probably end up working a very low-profile job. 

TV has a very clear idea of what a “genius” is and that’s an awkward MENSA member with secret people skills (oh, they have some, but really, really hate to use them). And of course that’s completely false. Your IQ number means nothing. What you read or how much you read or how fast you read, as opposed to what you get from what you read, means nothing.

Real intelligence is knowing how to use what little, or lot, you know, not how much you can amass.
